This 30 minute honey garlic chicken is a quick and flavorful dinner with tender chicken coated in a rich, sticky sweet-savory sauce. It is an easy one-pan meal that tastes better than takeout and works perfectly for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds chicken thighs or chicken breasts
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour or cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 green onions, sliced, optional
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, optional

Instructions

  1. Season the chicken with salt and black pepper, then lightly coat each piece with flour or cornstarch.
  2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the chicken and cook for 5 to 7 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Stir in the honey, soy sauce, ketchup, vinegar, and water until combined.
  6. Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for 2 to 4 minutes, until slightly thickened.
  7. Return the chicken to the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce.
  8. Cook for 2 to 3 more minutes, turning the chicken as needed, until the sauce is glossy and caramelized.
  9. Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds if desired, then serve warm.

Notes

  • Chicken thighs stay especially juicy, but chicken breasts also work well.
  • Add chili flakes or sriracha to the sauce for a spicy version.
  • Broccoli, bell peppers, or snap peas can be added for a more complete meal.
  • For a lighter variation, skip the flour or cornstarch coating.
  • Serve with rice, noodles, or steamed vegetables.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in a skillet or microwave with a splash of water to loosen the sauce if needed.
  • This dish freezes well for future meals.
